Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians represent the pinnacle of courage and technical expertise. The Navy EOD community traces its roots to World War II, when bomb disposal companies were established to deal with unexploded ordnance during operations in North Africa and Europe. During Operation Torch in November 1942 and the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, bomb disposal soldiers handled both Allied and Axis unexploded bombs while teaching troops bomb reconnaissance. A specialized school was established at Bristol, England, complete with a miniature village and UXB museum, initially staffed by Royal Engineer instructors and later by the 234th Bomb Disposal Company in fall 1943.
Since those early days, Navy EOD technicians have served with distinction in every conflict and crisis, from Korea and Vietnam to Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. They clear harbors and beaches for amphibious operations, neutralize roadside bombs, conduct underwater demolition, support special operations forces, and respond to terrorist threats. EOD technicians have earned numerous awards for valor, including Navy Crosses, Silver Stars, and Bronze Stars with "V" device for heroism under fire.
