Powering the Fleet
Electrician's Mates are the electrical specialists responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing electrical power generation, distribution, and utilization equipment aboard Navy ships and at shore installations. They maintain generators, switchboards, motors, controllers, lighting systems, and all the electrical equipment that keeps ships operational. Without EM personnel, ships would be dark, powerless, and unable to perform their missions.
EM personnel stand watch on electrical distribution systems, operate and maintain ship's service generators and emergency generators, troubleshoot electrical malfunctions, repair motors and controllers, maintain lighting systems, and ensure that electrical power is available when and where it's needed. They work with high voltage systems, complex electrical circuits, and sophisticated control equipment, often in challenging conditions including rough seas, extreme temperatures, and combat situations.
Technical Excellence and Safety
Electrician's Mates must master electrical theory, AC and DC power systems, motor controls, electrical safety procedures, and troubleshooting techniques. They read complex electrical diagrams, use sophisticated test equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and conduct repairs that keep electrical systems operational. Their work requires technical knowledge, attention to detail, and strict adherence to safety procedures—electrical systems can be deadly if not properly maintained and operated.
On ships, EM personnel work in engine rooms, electrical spaces, and throughout the vessel maintaining electrical equipment. They respond to casualties (equipment failures), conduct routine maintenance, perform emergency repairs, and ensure that electrical systems are ready for any mission. During general quarters (battle stations), Electrician's Mates man damage control stations and electrical distribution panels, ready to restore power if systems are damaged.
The Electrician's Mate rating serves in both the Navy and Coast Guard, with the Naval Occupational Specialty (NOS) code B210. EM personnel are essential members of every ship's crew, providing the electrical expertise that keeps vessels powered, operational, and mission-ready around the world.
Whether you are an Electrician's Mate, want to honor an EM rating sailor, or appreciate the critical role that electrical systems play in naval operations, this t-shirt represents technical expertise, dedication, and the power that keeps the fleet running.
Ideal for: Navy and Coast Guard EM rating sailors and veterans, electrical specialists, power systems technicians, veterans' families, and everyday wear.
Electrician's Mate. Powering the fleet. Technical excellence. Anchors Aweigh.
