Masters of Aviation Weapons Systems
Aviation Ordnancemen are the specialists responsible for maintaining, handling, and loading all aviation ordnance and weapons systems. They work with guns, bombs, torpedoes, rockets, missiles, and small arms—ensuring that every weapon system is properly maintained, safely handled, and correctly loaded on aircraft. Their work requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and nerves of steel—a single mistake could be catastrophic.
AO personnel are divided into three levels: Organizational (O-level) ordnancemen work directly with squadrons, loading and downloading weapons on aircraft and performing organizational-level maintenance. Intermediate (I-level) ordnancemen perform more complex maintenance on bomb racks, missile launchers, gun systems, and other armament components. Depot (D-level) ordnancemen handle the most complex overhaul and repair work on aviation weapons systems.
Danger and Precision on the Flight Deck
On aircraft carriers, Aviation Ordnancemen work in some of the most dangerous conditions in the Navy. They handle live ordnance on the flight deck—bombs, missiles, and ammunition—often in rough seas, high winds, and during night operations. They build up weapons (assembling bombs with fuses and guidance kits), transport ordnance from magazines to the flight deck, and load weapons onto aircraft preparing for combat missions.
AO personnel must be experts in weapons safety, handling procedures, and loading operations. They work with everything from 20mm cannon ammunition and 500-pound bombs to advanced guided missiles like the AIM-120 AMRAAM, AGM-88 HARM, and AGM-154 JSOW. They install fuses, connect guidance systems, perform safety checks, and ensure that every weapon is properly configured for its mission.
Aviation Ordnancemen also maintain aircraft gun systems, perform electrical and mechanical maintenance on weapons release systems, troubleshoot malfunctions, and ensure that all ordnance equipment meets strict safety and operational standards. Their motto reflects the danger and importance of their work: they are the ones who "Arm the Fleet."
Whether you are an Aviation Ordnanceman, want to honor an AO rating sailor, or appreciate the courage and expertise required to handle naval aviation weapons, this t-shirt represents precision, courage, and the dedication that gives naval aviation its combat power.
Ideal for: Navy AO rating sailors and veterans, naval aviation supporters, weapons specialists, veterans' families, and everyday wear.
Aviation Ordnanceman. Arm the Fleet. Precision and courage. Mission ready.
