Aviation Ordnanceman - Weapons Specialists
Aviation Ordnanceman (abbreviated as AO) is a United States Navy occupational rating. Aviation Ordnancemen operate and handle aviation ordnance equipment. They are responsible for the maintenance of guns, bombs, torpedoes, rockets, and missiles. Their duties include the stowing, issuing, and loading of munitions and small arms.
There are three different types of ordnanceman: "O" (organizational) level, "I" (intermediate) level, and "D" (depot) level. O-level ordnancemen are attached to squadrons ashore and afloat, performing loading and downloading operations on aircraft. I-level ordnancemen perform maintenance on bomb racks, missile launchers, and all other aircraft armament components. D-level ordnancemen work at depot facilities performing overhaul and repair of aviation ordnance equipment.
Precision and Safety - Combat Readiness
Aviation Ordnancemen are the weapons experts of naval aviation. They ensure that every bomb, missile, rocket, and round of ammunition is properly maintained, safely handled, and correctly loaded on aircraft. Their work requires technical knowledge, attention to detail, physical strength, and the ability to work safely with some of the most dangerous materials in the military.
Aviation Ordnancemen work on the flight deck of aircraft carriers, at naval air stations, and with deployed squadrons worldwide. They load weapons on fighter jets, attack aircraft, helicopters, and patrol planes, often working in challenging conditions—on pitching carrier decks, in extreme weather, and under time pressure to get aircraft armed and ready for missions. Their expertise ensures that naval aviators have the weapons they need to accomplish their missions and return safely.
Whether you are an Aviation Ordnanceman, earned the AO rating, or appreciate the technical expertise and dedication of Navy ordnance specialists, this t-shirt represents skill, professionalism, and the proud legacy of Aviation Ordnancemen.
