The 518th Infantry Regiment has been an Army Reserve unit since it was constituted in 1946 as the 518th Parachute Infantry in the Organized Reserves and activated on 6 August 1946 at Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1951 it was reorganized and redesignated as the 518th Airborne Infantry, a process repeated the next year when it became the 518th Infantry and was designated as an element of the 108th Infantry Division. It was designated a Regiment consisting of three Battalions (1st, 2nd, 3rd), all elements of the 108th Division (Training), on 30 April 1959. Today, the 1st and 3rd Battalions are subordinate units of the 2nd Brigade, 98th Training Division
