Kagnew Station, located in Asmara, Eritrea, was a significant U.S. Army and Navy communications facility established in 1943. It served as a major telecommunications hub controlling access to the Middle East oil fields and the Red Sea passage to the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. While the Army ceased operations there in 1973, the Navy continued to utilize the base for its communication needs. The station was a major presence in Asmara for three decades and became a topic of rumors and local interest.
