The 23rd Infantry Division, or Americal Division, was a US Army division formed in World War II on New Caledonia and fought in the Pacific Theater and later in the Vietnam War. The division is famous for both its distinguished jungle combat service and its unfortunate association with the My Lai massacre. It was a long-serving unit, composed of different brigades that participated in numerous battles and campaigns in the Pacific during WWII and throughout Vietnam.
