On D-Day, June 6, 1944, the Army's 22nd Infantry Regiment, as part of the 4th Infantry Division, landed on Utah Beach in Normandy, France, assaulting the German coastal defenses. The 3rd Battalion led the initial assault, followed by the 1st and 2nd Battalions. The regiment faced strong enemy resistance, but successfully established a beachhead, contributing to the subsequent breakout from Normandy and advance into Germany, with one of its patrols becoming the first American unit to reach German soil.
