The 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment was reassigned to the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Fort Hood, Texas, in February 1996. While stationed there, it participated in the Force XXI program, evaluating advanced technology and tactics for 21st-century warfare. Soldiers from the unit were deployed to Guantanamo Bay in 2002 to provide external security for detainee facilities and were awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Award for their service. The battalion was part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, during its deployment to Iraq in 2003–2004, returning to Fort Hood in late 2006.
