During the Gulf War's ground campaign in 1991, the 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment (1-1 Cav), part of the 1st Armored Division, engaged the Iraqi Medina Luminous Division at the Battle of Medina Ridge on February 27th. 1-1 Cav was tasked with scouting and disrupting Iraqi defenses, making the first contact with the enemy, and informing the division commander of their position. The squadron's cavalry scouts, operating with M1 tanks and M2 Bradleys, encountered Iraqi forces hidden on the reverse slope of the ridge, leading to a large tank battle where the 1st Armored Division ultimately destroyed the Iraqi units.
