The 187th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Rakkasans," has a unique and extensive history as the only airborne unit to serve in all major US conflicts and be involved in all forms of airborne warfare. Formed in 1943, they fought in the Pacific during WWII, including a combat jump and being the first foreign unit to enter occupied Japan, where they earned the "Rakkasan" nickname meaning "falling umbrella". They then served in Korea as an airborne combat team and later as helicopter-borne units in Vietnam and the Persian Gulf Wars. The 187th's current designation is as a helicopter air assault unit and a brigade combat team within the 101st Airborne Division.
