T order during conflicts like the Colfax County War, constructing infrastructure for the fort, and engaging in campaigns against various Indigenous groups. The 10th Cavalry Regiment, known as one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments, was a segregated African-American unit formed in 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. They served with distinction during the Indian Wars in the Western United States, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, and the Mexican Revolution. The nickname "Buffalo Soldiers" was given to them by Native Americans, possibly due to their dark, curly hair and fierce fighting abilities.
