The position of Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) was established in 1966 to provide the Chief of Staff of the Army with a personal advisor and representative for enlisted soldiers. It was inspired by the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps and intended to be a position of influence, not a near-retirement assignment. The first SMA was Sergeant Major William O. Wooldridge.
