The M198 is a medium, towed 155mm artillery piece developed for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps as a replacement for the WWII-era M114. Designed and prototyped at Rock Island Arsenal in 1969, it began firing tests in 1970, entered full production in 1978, and went into service in 1979 — with more than 1,600 units built since.
