17th Cavalry Regiment - Air Cavalry Heritage
The 17th Cavalry Regiment is a historical organization within the United States Army that began as a regiment of cavalry after the Pancho Villa Expedition. The unit was constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as the 17th Cavalry at Fort Bliss, Texas and originally inactivated 26 September 1921 at the Presidio of Monterey, California. Formerly a part of the 1950s Combat Arms Regimental System, it was reorganized as a part of the U.S. Army Regimental System, an ongoing effort to maintain the lineage and history of the U.S. Army through its units. Today, the 17th Cavalry Regiment is found across the army within the combat aviation brigades, where the squadrons, now constituted as attack/recon helicopter squadrons, carry on the legacy of the 17th Cavalry Regiment.
3rd Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry - Vietnam War Service
During the Vietnam War, the 3rd Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry served with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), conducting air cavalry operations throughout Vietnam. The squadron's troops flew armed helicopters including AH-1 Cobra gunships and OH-6 Cayuse scout helicopters, conducting reconnaissance missions, providing fire support for ground forces, and engaging enemy forces in aerial combat.
Bravo Troop, 3rd Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry was one of the squadron's premier air cavalry troops. The troop's pilots and crew members flew dangerous missions over hostile territory, often at low altitude and under enemy fire. They conducted visual reconnaissance, located enemy positions, called in artillery and air strikes, and engaged enemy forces with rockets and machine guns.
Air cavalry operations in Vietnam were among the most dangerous missions of the war. Helicopter crews faced enemy small arms fire, anti-aircraft weapons, and the constant threat of mechanical failure. They flew in all weather conditions, day and night, supporting ground forces in contact with the enemy and conducting search and destroy missions in enemy-controlled territory.
The soldiers who served with Bravo Troop, 3rd Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry demonstrated extraordinary courage and skill. Many earned Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air Medals, and Purple Hearts for their service. Their air cavalry tactics revolutionized modern warfare and established the foundation for today's attack helicopter operations.
