HISTORY

  • The "US Veterinary Command" was established on June 3, 1916, by an Act of Congress, evolving from a need for veterinary expertise in the military since the days of George Washington. Before the official establishment of the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, veterinarians served in the Army as non-commissioned officers, with a unique insignia of a winged and shod horse's foot. The corps has since expanded to include food safety, veterinary public health, and animal health, supporting the overall readiness of the Army and the Department of Defense.
