Army Special Forces played a critical and unique role in the Vietnam War. Green Berets arrived in Vietnam in the early 1960s and remained throughout the conflict, conducting unconventional warfare operations, training and leading indigenous forces, and fighting in some of the most dangerous and remote areas of Southeast Asia. Special Forces soldiers lived and fought alongside Montagnard tribesmen, Vietnamese forces, and other indigenous groups, earning their trust and leading them in combat against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces.
Special Forces established camps throughout South Vietnam's border regions and Central Highlands, creating a network of outposts that interdicted enemy infiltration routes and provided intelligence on enemy movements. Green Berets conducted long-range reconnaissance patrols, direct action missions, foreign internal defense, and unconventional warfare operations that were critical to the war effort.
MACV-SOG and Combat Excellence
