The Story Behind the Design
Designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958 as the emblem of the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the peace sign fused the semaphore signals for "N" and "D" into a single, unmistakable mark. It echoed Goya's The Third of May 1808 โ a peasant before a firing squad, arms outstretched โ and became the universal language of those who refused to accept war as inevitable.
