Garryowen - Historic Cavalry Regiment

The 7th Cavalry Regiment is a United States Army cavalry regiment formed in 1866. Its official nickname is "Garryowen," after the Irish air "Garryowen" that was adopted as its march tune.

The 7th Cavalry Regiment is one of the most famous and storied units in the United States Army. From its formation in 1866, the regiment has participated in virtually every major American conflict. The 7th Cavalry fought in the Indian Wars on the Great Plains, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. The regiment served in the Philippines, fought in World War II in the Pacific, and deployed to Korea where it earned distinction in combat.

Vietnam to Modern Combat

The 7th Cavalry Regiment gained renewed fame during the Vietnam War, particularly through the 1st Battalion's service with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). The regiment fought in the Ia Drang Valley in 1965, the first major battle between U.S. and North Vietnamese forces, demonstrating the effectiveness of airmobile operations. The 7th Cavalry continued to serve throughout the Vietnam War, conducting air assault operations and fighting in major campaigns.

In modern times, the 7th Cavalry Regiment has deployed to the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Soldiers of the 7th Cavalry have served in cavalry scout units, armor battalions, and aviation squadrons, carrying forward the regiment's proud traditions while adapting to modern warfare. Whether mounted on horses in the 19th century, riding in tanks and helicopters in the 20th century, or operating modern armored vehicles today, the 7th Cavalry Regiment continues to serve with distinction.

A Company soldiers carry the guidon that represents their unit's heritage and their commitment to the 7th Cavalry's proud traditions. They honor those who came before while writing new chapters in the regiment's storied history.

Whether you serve or served with A Company, 7th Cavalry Regiment, are a Garryowen soldier, or appreciate the historic legacy of one of the Army's most famous cavalry regiments, this t-shirt represents tradition, courage, and the proud legacy of the 7th Cavalry.
