The 66th Infantry Division earned its fearsome nickname through relentless training and an iron will to fight. Activated in 1943, the Black Panthers shipped out to the European Theater in the final winter of World War II — arriving just in time to contain the last desperate German breakout at the Lorient and Saint-Nazaire pockets on the French coast.
Their story carries a weight few units share. On Christmas Eve 1944, the troopship SS Leopoldville was torpedoed in the English Channel, claiming the lives of hundreds of 66th Division soldiers before they ever reached the front. Those who survived pressed on — holding the line, honoring the fallen, and finishing the mission.
