HISTORY
-
The 59th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog) history traces its origins to the 59th Infantry Counterfire Platoon, constituted in 1951. It was redesignated as the 59th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog) in 1968 and activated at Fort Benning in Georgia. The unit's history connects to the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal), which was a major command during the Vietnam War, though the 59th Platoon itself became combat-ready in 1968, after the 23rd Division's main components had already served in Vietnam.
