3rd Infantry Regiment - The Old Guard
The 3rd United States Infantry Regiment is a regiment of the United States Army. It currently has three active battalions, and is readily identified by its nickname, The Old Guard, as well as Escort to the President. The regiment is the oldest currently-active regiment in the Regular Army, having been first organized as the First American Regiment in 1784. It has been the official ceremonial unit of the US Army since 1948.
The Old Guard is headquartered at Fort Myer, Virginia, adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery. The regiment's soldiers perform a wide range of ceremonial missions including military funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, presidential inaugurations, state arrivals, and other official ceremonies in the National Capital Region.
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - Sentinels
The 3rd Infantry Regiment's most sacred duty is guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Soldiers of the regiment's elite Tomb Guard Platoon maintain a 24-hour vigil over the Tomb, marching in precise patterns in all weather conditions, demonstrating the nation's commitment to honoring those who gave their lives in service to America.
Becoming a Tomb Guard Sentinel is one of the highest honors in the U.S. Army. Soldiers must meet rigorous standards of height, physical fitness, and military bearing. They undergo months of intensive training to learn the precise movements, history, and traditions of the Tomb. Those who complete training earn the Tomb Guard Identification Badge, one of the rarest badges in the Army, which can be revoked for any conduct unbecoming a Sentinel.
Ceremonial Excellence and Combat Readiness
While The Old Guard is best known for its ceremonial missions, the regiment maintains combat readiness and has deployed to combat zones when called upon. During the Civil War, World War II, and other conflicts, elements of the 3rd Infantry Regiment have served in combat operations, maintaining the regiment's proud combat heritage.
Soldiers of The Old Guard maintain the highest standards of military appearance, discipline, and professionalism. They represent the U.S. Army at the nation's most important ceremonies and serve as ambassadors of the Army to the American people and foreign dignitaries. Their precision, dedication, and commitment to excellence honor all who have served in the U.S. Army.
Whether you serve or served with The Old Guard, are a Tomb Guard Sentinel, or appreciate the ceremonial excellence and sacred mission of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, this apparel represents honor, dedication, and the proud legacy of America's oldest active regiment.
