HISTORY

  • Early History: The battalion's lineage traces back to Battery B, 4th Field Artillery, organized in 1907. This unit was active in the early 20th century and was later reorganized as Battery B, 4th Field Artillery Battalion, during World War II, serving in the Philippine Islands.
  • Vietnam War: The 2nd Battalion was reactivated on February 1, 1966, and served in Vietnam as a 105mm towed artillery unit until 1970. During this period, the battalion earned numerous honors, including the Valorous Unit Award and the Medal of Honor, received by Private First Class (later Sergeant) Sammy Davis.
  • Post-Vietnam: The battalion was inactivated and reactivated several times in the 1970s and 1980s, primarily stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, and assigned to the 9th Infantry Division.
  • Modern Era (MLRS): In 1996, the battalion was reactivated at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, equipped with the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).
