21st Infantry Regiment - Gimlet

The 21st Infantry Regiment ("Gimlet") is a United States Army infantry regiment. The 1st and 3rd Battalions of the 21st currently exist as part of the 25th Infantry Division. The regiment fought in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, as well as Operation Iraqi Freedom. Task Force Smith, the first American unit to see action in the Korean War, was derived from the regiment's 1st Battalion.

The 21st Infantry Regiment earned its "Gimlet" nickname for its ability to pierce enemy defenses like the sharp-pointed tool of the same name. This aggressive spirit and determination to break through enemy lines was demonstrated throughout the Korean War, where Gimlet soldiers fought in some of the conflict's most intense battles.

Task Force Smith - First Into Korea

Task Force Smith, named after Lieutenant Colonel Charles B. Smith, was formed from the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment and elements of the 52nd Field Artillery Battalion. On July 5, 1950, Task Force Smith became the first American ground combat unit to engage North Korean forces in the Korean War, fighting a delaying action near Osan, South Korea.

Though outnumbered and outgunned, the soldiers of Task Force Smith fought bravely against North Korean tanks and infantry, buying time for additional American forces to deploy to Korea. The battle demonstrated the courage of American soldiers and the challenges they would face in the Korean War. Many soldiers of Task Force Smith were killed, wounded, or captured, and their sacrifice is remembered as a testament to American resolve.

Korean War Service - Infantry Courage

The 21st Infantry Regiment fought throughout the Korean War, participating in major battles including the Pusan Perimeter, the Inchon Landing, the drive to the Yalu River, the Chinese intervention, and the subsequent fighting that characterized the war. Gimlet soldiers fought in brutal conditions, enduring extreme cold in winter and oppressive heat in summer, fighting in mountains, valleys, and rice paddies.

Infantry soldiers of the 21st Infantry Regiment demonstrated extraordinary courage in Korea, fighting against overwhelming odds, holding defensive positions against human wave attacks, and conducting offensive operations against entrenched enemy forces. They earned numerous unit citations and individual awards for their service, and many made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Whether you appreciate Korean War history, honor the memory of Task Force Smith, or recognize the service of 21st Infantry Regiment soldiers, this mug represents courage, sacrifice, and the proud legacy of the Gimlet in Korea.
