The 21st Infantry traces its history back to the 2nd Battalion of the 12th Infantry Regiment, formed on 3 May 1861 for the American Civil War.
The 21st Infantry Regiment has served with distinction in every major American conflict from the Civil War through Iraq and Afghanistan. The regiment earned its nickname "Gimlet" for its ability to pierce enemy defenses like the sharp-pointed tool of the same name. Gimlet - Combat Excellence
The 21st Infantry Regiment has fought in the Civil War, the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and Iraq and Afghanistan.
