The 10th Cavalry Regiment — Buffalo Soldiers of Fort Gibson
In 1866, Congress authorized the formation of the first peacetime all-Black regiments in the United States Army. Among them, the 10th Cavalry Regiment — men who would earn the enduring name Buffalo Soldiers, bestowed upon them by the Native American warriors who faced them in the field and respected their tenacity and courage.
Stationed at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, these soldiers served with distinction across the frontier, protecting settlers, escorting mail routes, and building the infrastructure of a growing nation — all while fighting for a country that had yet to fully recognize their humanity. Their sacrifice and valor are woven into the fabric of American military history.
