A Legacy of Strategic Bombing Excellence
The 716th Bomb Squadron was one of four squadrons in the 449th Bomb Group (Heavy), which flew B-24 Liberator heavy bombers as part of the 15th Air Force. The squadron was commanded by John A. Silverstein (who later changed his name to John "Jack" Steele) from June 1943 to July 1944, followed by Charles E. Harton from July 1944 to November 1944.
Operating from Grottaglie, Italy, the 449th Bomb Group participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany and Axis targets throughout Europe. The group flew missions against oil refineries, aircraft factories, marshalling yards, and other strategic targets in Germany, Austria, Romania, and throughout occupied Europe. These missions were extremely dangerous, with bomber crews facing intense anti-aircraft fire, enemy fighters, and the constant threat of mechanical failure over hostile territory.
The 449th Bomb Group earned a Distinguished Unit Citation for its participation in the crucial bombing of the Ploesti oil fields in Romania, one of the most heavily defended targets in Europe.
