568th Bombardment Squadron - European Theater

The squadron was first activated during World War II as the 568th Bombardment Squadron. After training in the United States, it deployed to the European Theater of Operations, where it participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Germany. It was twice awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for its actions in combat. After V-E Day, the squadron returned to the United States, where it was inactivated in August 1945. The squadron was active in the reserve from 1947 until 1949, but does not appear to have been fully manned or equipped at this time.

The 568th Bombardment Squadron was part of the massive strategic bombing campaign that targeted German industrial capacity, transportation networks, and military installations. The squadron's airmen flew heavy bombers deep into enemy territory, facing German fighter aircraft and intense anti-aircraft fire to deliver their bombs on target.

Strategic Bombing Campaign - Courage Over Germany

Strategic bombing missions over Germany were among the most dangerous operations of World War II. Bomber crews faced German Luftwaffe fighters, radar-directed anti-aircraft artillery, and the constant threat of mechanical failure. They flew in tight formations at high altitude, enduring sub-zero temperatures, oxygen deprivation, and the psychological stress of combat missions that could last eight hours or more.

The 568th Bombardment Squadron's airmen included pilots, co-pilots, navigators, bombardiers, flight engineers, radio operators, and gunners. Each crew member played a critical role in the success of the mission. Pilots flew the heavy bombers through enemy fire, navigators plotted courses to and from the target, bombardiers aimed and released the bombs, and gunners defended the aircraft from enemy fighters.

Distinguished Unit Citations - Extraordinary Heroism

The 568th Bombardment Squadron was twice awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation, one of the highest unit awards for extraordinary heroism in action. These citations recognized the squadron's performance on particularly difficult and dangerous missions where the airmen demonstrated exceptional courage, determination, and professionalism in the face of overwhelming enemy opposition.

Many airmen of the 568th Bombardment Squadron earned individual awards including Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air Medals, and Purple Hearts. Some were shot down and became prisoners of war, while others made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives in the skies over Europe. Their service and sacrifice contributed to the defeat of Nazi Germany and the liberation of Europe.

Whether you appreciate World War II history, honor the memory of Army Air Corps airmen, or recognize the courage of the 568th Bombardment Squadron, this mug represents valor, sacrifice, and the proud legacy of strategic bombing in the European Theater.
