The Pyramiders - North Africa and Beyond
The 98th Bombardment Group earned its nickname "Pyramiders" from its operations in North Africa, where crews could see the ancient pyramids of Egypt from their bases. The group was one of the first B-24 Liberator units to enter combat in the Mediterranean Theater, flying from bases in Libya and Egypt before moving to Italy.
The 343rd Bombardment Squadron was one of the original squadrons of the 98th Bomb Group, along with the 344th, 345th, and 415th Bombardment Squadrons. These squadrons flew thousands of combat missions throughout the Mediterranean Theater, operating B-24 Liberators—the four-engine heavy bomber that became essential to Allied strategic bombing operations.
B-24 Liberator Operations in the Mediterranean
The 98th Bombardment Group conducted strategic bombing missions against Axis targets throughout North Africa, the Mediterranean, and Southern Europe. Flying from bases in Libya, Egypt, and later Italy, B-24 crews of the 98th Bomb Group struck at enemy airfields, ports, oil refineries, industrial facilities, and military installations.
The group participated in some of the most significant bombing operations of the war, including the famous low-level raid on the Ploesti oil refineries in Romania—one of the most heavily defended targets in Europe. The 98th Bomb Group also supported Allied ground forces during the North African campaign, the invasion of Sicily, the Italian campaign, and operations throughout the Balkans.
Haulin Ass - Combat Spirit and Determination
The "Haulin Ass" spirit represented the determination and grit of the 343rd Bombardment Squadron crews who flew through flak, faced enemy fighters, and pressed home their attacks against heavily defended targets. B-24 crews faced intense anti-aircraft fire, German and Italian fighters, mechanical challenges, and the constant dangers of long-range bombing operations over hostile territory.
The aircrews of the 98th Bomb Group—pilots, co-pilots, navigators, bombardiers, flight engineers, radio operators, and gunners—demonstrated exceptional courage and skill in combat. They flew through Mediterranean weather, navigated over vast expanses of desert and sea, and delivered their ordnance on target despite enemy opposition. Their determination and sacrifice contributed significantly to Allied victory in the Mediterranean Theater.
