A Legacy of Special Forces Excellence
The 77th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was activated at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on November 10, 1953, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Jack T. Shannon. The group built rapidly from an initial strength of only 200 soldiers, growing into a formidable unconventional warfare force. Their motto, "Any Thing, Any Time, Any Place, Any How," embodied the can-do spirit and versatility that defines Special Forces.
The 77th SFG was part of the early expansion of U.S. Army Special Forces during the Cold War, when unconventional warfare capabilities were being developed to counter Soviet influence around the world.
