The 359th Fighter Group - East Wretham Eagles
The 359th Fighter Group was activated on January 15, 1943, and deployed to England in October 1943 to join the Eighth Air Force at RAF East Wretham. The group became operational in December 1943, flying the P-47 Thunderbolt before transitioning to the legendary P-51 Mustang in April 1944—the long-range fighter that changed the air war over Europe.
The 359th consisted of three fighter squadrons: the 368th, 369th, and 370th Fighter Squadrons. These squadrons flew a critical mix of bomber escort missions protecting B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators on deep penetration raids into Germany, as well as fighter sweeps, ground attack missions against enemy airfields and transportation, and armed reconnaissance missions across occupied Europe.
P-51 Mustang - The Fighter That Won Air Superiority
The North American P-51 Mustang was the finest American fighter of World War II and arguably the best all-around piston-engine fighter ever built. With its Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, laminar-flow wing, and long-range fuel capacity, the Mustang could escort bombers all the way to Berlin and back—something no other Allied fighter could do when it entered service.
P-51 pilots of the 359th Fighter Group engaged German Luftwaffe fighters including Bf 109s and Fw 190s in aerial combat, protected bomber formations from enemy attacks, strafed enemy airfields and ground targets, and helped establish the air superiority that made the D-Day invasion and Allied victory possible. The distinctive checkered nose markings and squadron colors made 359th Fighter Group Mustangs instantly recognizable in the skies over Europe.
Combat Record and Legacy
From December 1943 through May 1945, the 359th Fighter Group flew hundreds of combat missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. The group's pilots claimed numerous aerial victories against the Luftwaffe, destroyed enemy aircraft on the ground, and provided crucial escort protection for the heavy bomber formations that struck at the heart of Nazi Germany's war machine.
359th Fighter Group pilots earned Distinguished Unit Citations, Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air Medals, and other decorations for their courage and skill in combat. They flew through flak, engaged enemy fighters, and brought their bombers home—contributing to the strategic bombing campaign that crippled Nazi Germany's ability to wage war and helped bring victory in Europe.
