Tropic Lightning in Vietnam
The 25th Infantry Division, in response to a request from the U.S. Military Assistance Command in Vietnam, sent 100 helicopter door-gunners to South Vietnam in early 1963. By August 1965, further division involvement in the coming Vietnam War included the deployment of Company C, 65th Engineer Battalion, to South Vietnam to assist in the construction of port facilities at Cam Ranh Bay. By mid-1965, 2,200 men of the Tropic Lightning Division were involved in Vietnam.
The division deployed to Vietnam in 1966 and established its headquarters at Cu Chi, northwest of Saigon. The 25th Infantry Division operated in some of the most challenging terrain in Vietnam, conducting combat operations in the jungles, rice paddies, and villages of III Corps. Tropic Lightning soldiers fought against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces, conducted search and destroy missions, and defended critical areas around Saigon.
Cu Chi and Combat Excellence
The 25th Infantry Division became famous for its operations around Cu Chi, where soldiers discovered and fought in the extensive tunnel networks used by the Viet Cong. Division soldiers participated in major operations including the Tet Offensive of 1968, where they defended Saigon and fought to reclaim areas seized by enemy forces. Throughout their deployment, Tropic Lightning soldiers demonstrated courage, adaptability, and combat effectiveness in the difficult conditions of the Vietnam War.
The division's nickname "Tropic Lightning" reflected both its origins in Hawaii and the speed and power with which it struck the enemy. From jungle combat to urban fighting, from tunnel warfare to large-scale operations, the 25th Infantry Division soldiers proved themselves time and again, earning numerous unit citations and individual decorations for valor.
