Vietnam's Aviation Pioneers
The 1st Aviation Brigade traces its origins to the Vietnam War. In April 1965, the U.S. Army Aviation Brigade (Provisional) was activated with the existing 13th, 14th, 52nd, and 145th Aviation Battalions already in South Vietnam. In August 1965 it became the 12th Aviation Group, which then doubled in size and was used to form the 1st Aviation Brigade in March 1966.
The brigade was formed to achieve standardization among the numerous independent aviation companies deployed during the war's early years, which had become difficult to move between sectors because they had developed individual means of operating in conjunction with the formations they supported.
Airmobile Warfare Excellence
The 1st Aviation Brigade became the largest aviation command in Vietnam, coordinating helicopter assault operations, medical evacuations, reconnaissance missions, and fire support across the theater. From UH-1 Hueys to AH-1 Cobras, CH-47 Chinooks to OH-6 Cayuses, the brigade's aircraft became the lifeline of American forces in Vietnam.
Brigade aviators and crew members flew in some of the war's most intense combat, inserting infantry into hot landing zones, extracting wounded under fire, providing close air support, and conducting aerial reconnaissance. The distinctive sound of helicopter rotors became synonymous with American operations in Vietnam, and the 1st Aviation Brigade was at the heart of that revolution in warfare.
