Panama (1989) — Operation Just Cause

On December 20, 1989, the United States launched Operation Just Cause — one of the largest American combat operations since Vietnam and a landmark moment in the history of joint warfare.

The Mission

President George H.W. Bush ordered the invasion to remove Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, protect American citizens and the Panama Canal, and restore democratic governance. Over 27,000 U.S. troops participated in the operation.

The Fight

The 82nd Airborne, 75th Ranger Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, Navy SEALs, and Delta Force executed simultaneous strikes across Panama in the early morning hours — neutralizing Panamanian Defense Forces, securing key infrastructure, and hunting Noriega. The operation was swift, decisive, and a showcase of American joint combat power.

The Legacy
