Seabees in Afghanistan: Building Under Fire
From 2001 to 2021, Navy Seabees deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, conducting critical construction, engineering, and combat operations in one of the world's most challenging environments. Seabees built and maintained forward operating bases, constructed roads and bridges, cleared improvised explosive devices (IEDs), provided force protection, and enabled combat operations across Afghanistan's rugged terrain. Their work was essential to mission success, often performed under enemy fire in remote, austere locations.
The Seabee Legacy
The United States Naval Construction Battalions—better known as the Navy Seabees—form the U.S. Naval Construction Force (NCF). The Seabee nickname is a heterograph of the first letters "CB" from Construction Battalion. Established during World War II, Seabees have served in every major conflict since, combining construction expertise with combat capability. They are the only military occupational specialty trained to fight with weapons in one hand and build with tools in the other.
