The Blue Ridge Division Legacy
The 80th Infantry Division was organized in August 1917 during World War I, drawing soldiers primarily from Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia—the Blue Ridge Mountain region that gave the division its nickname. The division's distinctive insignia features three blue mountains representing the states that contributed the majority of its soldiers.
World War I: Breaking the Hindenburg Line
During World War I, the 80th Infantry Division fought with distinction in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, one of the largest and bloodiest battles in American military history. The division helped break through the formidable Hindenburg Line and participated in the final Allied offensive that led to Germany's surrender in November 1918.
World War II and Beyond
Reactivated in 1942, the 80th Infantry Division landed in Normandy in August 1944 and fought across France, Luxembourg, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. The division participated in the liberation of numerous towns and cities, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, crossed the Rhine River, and helped liberate concentration camps. The Blue Ridge Division earned numerous campaign streamers and unit citations for its combat performance in the European Theater.
Airborne Excellence
After World War II, the 80th Infantry Division continued to serve in the Army Reserve and later as a training division, maintaining its proud traditions and heritage. The addition of the Airborne Tab represents the elite airborne qualification earned by soldiers who completed rigorous parachute training and served in airborne operations.
