Kagnew Station — high on the Horn of Africa in Asmara, Eritrea — was one of the U.S. Army’s most strategically vital and least-known Cold War installations. From 1943 to 1977, it served as a global signals intelligence and communications relay hub, home to the 4th Detachment of the Second Signal Service Battalion.
