3rd Infantry Division - Rock of the Marne

The 3rd Infantry Division (nicknamed The Rock of the Marne) is a combined arms division of the United States Army based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. It is a direct subordinate unit of the XVIII Airborne Corps and U.S. Army Forces Command. Its current organization includes a division headquarters and headquarters battalion, two armored brigade combat teams, one National Guard infantry brigade combat team, a task force unit, one aviation brigade, a division artillery, a sustainment brigade and a combat sustainment support battalion along with a maneuver enhancement brigade. The division has a distinguished history, having seen active service in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terror. The Medal of Honor has been awarded to 56 members of the 3rd Infantry Division, making the division the most honored in the Army.

Iraq War - First to Fight

The 3rd Infantry Division was the first major Army unit to cross into Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003. The division led the ground invasion, conducting a rapid advance from Kuwait to Baghdad in one of the most successful military operations in modern history. The division's soldiers fought in intense combat, destroyed Iraqi military forces, and captured Baghdad in just three weeks.

The division's "Thunder Run" into Baghdad became legendary—armored columns drove through the heart of the Iraqi capital under fire, demonstrating American combat power and breaking the will of Iraqi forces to resist. The 3rd Infantry Division's performance during the invasion showcased the division's tactical proficiency, aggressive spirit, and combat excellence.

Rock of the Marne in Iraq - Multiple Deployments

The 3rd Infantry Division deployed to Iraq multiple times during Operation Iraqi Freedom, conducting combat operations, counterinsurgency missions, and stability operations. Division soldiers fought in Baghdad, Fallujah, Ramadi, and throughout Iraq, facing insurgents, conducting raids, establishing security, and training Iraqi security forces.

Soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division faced improvised explosive devices (IEDs), small arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades, and complex ambushes. They conducted mounted and dismounted patrols, established checkpoints, conducted raids on insurgent targets, and worked to win the trust and support of the Iraqi population. The division's soldiers earned numerous Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts, and other awards for their service.

Many soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq, giving their lives in service to their country. Their courage and dedication contributed to the defeat of Al-Qaeda in Iraq and the establishment of a democratic government in Iraq.
