The Purple Heart is a U.S. military decoration awarded to service members wounded or killed in action against an enemy. It originated from the Badge of Military Merit, established by George Washington in 1782. The modern Purple Heart, as we know it, was revived in 1932 and made retroactive to World War I. During the Vietnam War, the Purple Heart was awarded to many soldiers who were wounded in action, either by enemy fire or other hostile actions.
