Regulars, By God! 6th Infantry Regiment. Since 1812.

At the Battle of Chippawa in 1814, British Major General Phineas Riall watched an American regiment advance in militia uniforms and assumed an easy victory — until they pressed the attack with the discipline and ferocity of professional soldiers. When Riall realized his error, he reportedly exclaimed "Why, these are Regulars!" The motto "Regulars, By God!" was born. This premium 15oz white ceramic mug honors the 6th Infantry Regiment with the DUI, branch insignia, and service ribbon — a tribute to one of the oldest and most storied infantry regiments in the United States Army.

Formed in 1812. Commanded by Future Presidents and Generals.

The 6th Infantry Regiment was formed on 11 January 1812 — more than two centuries of continuous service to the United States Army. Zachary Taylor, the twelfth President of the United States, commanded the regiment. Winfield Scott, who would become Commanding General of the United States Army, led the regiment at Chippawa and recorded Riall's famous remark in his memoirs. The regiment that earned the "Regulars, By God!" motto has carried that standard through every major American conflict since the War of 1812 — the DUI, branch insignia, and service ribbon on this mug represent that entire legacy.

Unit History

The 6th Infantry Regiment ("Regulars") was formed 11 January 1812. Zachary Taylor, later the twelfth President of the United States, was a commander of the unit. The motto "Regulars, By God!" derives from the Battle of Chippawa, in which British Major General Phineas Riall realized the approaching regiment was not militia but professional soldiers. According to the memoirs of regimental commander Winfield Scott, later Commanding General of the United States Army, Riall remarked "Why, these are Regulars!"
