About the WASP

The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) was a World War II organization of civilian women pilots who flew for the U.S. Army Air Forces. Formed in August 1943 from the merger of the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron and the Women's Flying Training Detachment, its graduates ferried over 50% of the combat aircraft within the United States during the war years, towed targets for gunnery training, and served as instrument instructors across 126 stateside bases. Thirty-eight WASPs died in their service. The program ended on December 20, 1944, and its members were later granted partial veteran status in 1977 and honored with the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009.
