During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the United States Merchant Marine was the invisible backbone of the largest military sealift since World War II — moving millions of tons of equipment, fuel, ammunition, and supplies across the Atlantic and through the Persian Gulf to support Allied forces.
