Come Out Fighting: The Story of the Black Panthers
Activated in 1942, the 761st Tank Battalion was one of the first African American tank units to see combat in World War II. Attached to General George S. Patton’s Third Army, the battalion landed in France in October 1944 and fought for 183 consecutive days across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, including brutal action during the Battle of the Bulge. Their motto, “Come Out Fighting,” became their legacy—one recognized decades later in 1978 when the unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its extraordinary heroism.
