The 3rd Battalion, 22nd Infantry was constituted on 3 May 1861 in the Regular Army as Companies C and F, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry. It has over 85 years of continuous service and has played an important part in many major episodes of United States history. The regiment was reorganized and redesignated 21 September 1866 as Companies C and F, 22nd Infantry Regiment. The unit fought five campaigns in the Indian Wars. The battalion was instrumental in the discovery and development of untapped resources, and in uncovering the wonders of the Yellowstone territory and other areas of national importance.
