VII Corps - Cold War Defenders to Desert Storm Victors
The VII Army Corps of the United States Army was one of the two principal corps of the United States Army Europe during the Cold War. Activated in 1918 for World War I, it was reactivated for World War II and again during the Cold War. During both World War II and the Cold War it was subordinate to the Seventh Army, or USAREUR and was headquartered at Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart, West Germany, from 1951 until it was redeployed to the US after significant success in the Gulf War in 1991, then inactivated in 1992.
VII Corps was the heavy armored fist of the U.S. Army in Europe, maintaining readiness to defend Western Europe against Soviet aggression throughout the Cold War. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, VII Corps was deployed from Germany to Saudi Arabia, bringing its combat power and Cold War readiness to the Persian Gulf.
The Left Hook - Desert Storm Victory
During Operation Desert Storm in February 1991, VII Corps executed one of the most successful military operations in U.S. Army history. The corps conducted a sweeping left hook maneuver deep into Iraq, outflanking Iraqi defensive positions and attacking the Republican Guard from an unexpected direction. VII Corps units—including the 1st and 3rd Armored Divisions, 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized), 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, and British 1st Armoured Division—destroyed Iraqi armored forces in a series of decisive battles.
The Battle of 73 Easting, the Battle of Norfolk, and other engagements demonstrated the overwhelming superiority of VII Corps' training, equipment, and tactics. In just 100 hours of ground combat, VII Corps destroyed or captured thousands of Iraqi tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces while suffering minimal casualties. The corps' performance validated decades of Cold War training and preparation.
VII Corps Gulf War veterans served in armor, mechanized infantry, artillery, aviation, engineer, and support units. They fought in harsh desert conditions, navigated through oil fires and smoke, and executed complex combined arms operations that overwhelmed Iraqi forces and liberated Kuwait.
Whether you served with VII Armored Corps during the Gulf War, want to honor a VII Corps veteran, or appreciate the decisive victory achieved in Desert Storm, this t-shirt represents combat excellence, professional competence, and the proud legacy of VII Corps.
