The Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) is the most senior enlisted position in the U.S. Army, established in 1966. The SMA serves as the senior enlisted advisor and consultant to the Chief of Staff of the Army, providing insights on enlisted soldier issues and the overall health of the NCO Corps. The first SMA was William O. Wooldridge, who served from 1966 to 1968.
