In the U.S. Army, a Sergeant First Class (SFC) is an E-7 rank, the first of the senior non-commissioned officer (NCO) ranks. SFCs typically serve as platoon sergeants, responsible for the training and welfare of soldiers. They are key assistants and advisors to the platoon leader and generally have 10 to 15 years of experience. The rank was re-established in 1948, replacing the Technical Sergeant rank.
