Organized in October 1917 at Camp Funston, Kansas, the 92nd Division was composed entirely of African American soldiers from across the United States — men who answered the call to serve a country still grappling with its own ideals. Before deploying to the Western Front in 1918, the division chose the American buffalo as its insignia, honoring the legendary Buffalo Soldiers — the African American cavalrymen of the 19th century whose name was given to them by the Plains tribes they faced in battle.
That nickname, and the fighting spirit it represented, was inherited from the 366th Infantry Regiment, one of the first units organized within the division.
