The 332nd FG was formed by volunteer African American pilots who overcame prejudice and segregation to become a highly respected fighter group. Their primary mission was to escort bombers in Southern Europe, and they eventually flew as far as Berlin. The group earned a Distinguished Unit Citation for their longest bomber escort mission to Berlin on March 24, 1945
