Unit History
The history of the sergeant major extends back to the
earliest days of the Army of the United States, but the role
that we currently associate with the sergeant major of today is
relatively young. Only through continued refinement of the
position by forward-thinking leaders, commanders, and
noncommissioned officers has the rank of sergeant major been
elevated to its prestigious position.
